A guy at my bad movie club in Austin said my picks were too easy to riff, so I started grading them on a 1 to 10 scale
We meet up in Austin every other Friday and do three movies back to back, and for about a year I was the one bringing the discs. I thought I was crushing it with stuff like Sharknado and The Room, but after one marathon a guy named Dev just looked at me and said those films do all the work for you. He said real bad movie night picks need to be boring enough that you and your friends have to build the jokes yourselves. So I made a dumb scoring sheet with categories like bad acting, dead air, confusing plot, and how many times someone checks their phone. Turns out my old picks were landing around a 3 or 4, and the winners like Troll 2 and Birdemic hit 7 or 8. Now I test each one with two friends before club night and if nobody laughs in the first 20 minutes it gets cut. Has anyone else had a group turn on their taste and make them redo their whole rotation?
Pushing that scoring sheet further, you could track which categories actually get people riffing, since dead air and confusing plot probably carry way more weight than bad acting. Do that for a few months and you'll have a real system instead of just vibes.
