Update: I quit feeding my hens corn scratch every morning after reading a post from a guy in Ames
I always thought scratch was just part of having chickens, my grandma did it, so I did it too. Then a guy on here from Ames posted that his hens laid way more once he cut scratch down to just a cold weather treat, because scratch is like candy and messes with their protein. I tried it for 3 weeks, and my 6 hens went from 3 or 4 eggs a day to 5 or 6, plus the feed bill dropped a few bucks. So what treats do you all use that are not just empty calories?
My grandma would roll over in her grave if she saw me measuring out mealworms like they're a prescription. Cutting scratch is the easy part, the hard part is watching them stare at you like you've betrayed the whole family. I've had good luck with black oil sunflower seeds, but you have to go easy or they'll just get fat and lazy. A handful of leftover greens from the garden works too, my hens go nuts for kale stems and wilted lettuce. Cooked egg shells crumbled up give them calcium so the shells stay hard. Scratch is basically chicken candy, so of course they act like you took away their birthday. Your egg numbers tell the whole story though, so keep at it.
