Saw a coop in Portland with 6 hens on bare dirt and they looked healthier than my grass run birds
Stopped by a guy's setup in Portland last weekend and he keeps 6 hens on plain dirt with just a pile of leaves, no grass at all, and every bird had bright combs and clean feathers, which made me question why I'm out there reseeding my run twice a year.
Ha, six hens is a tiny flock so of course they look sharp, that proves nothing. A guy with six birds on dirt can baby them all day while my forty on grass are running around getting dirty like normal chickens. I'd want to see that same setup hold up with a real flock before I go ripping out my grass.
