Am I the only one who didn't know a heat lamp can kill chicks in a small brooder?
A gal at the co-op in Fresno told me last week her neighbor lost 6 chicks in one night because the 250 watt bulb was clamped too low in a tiny plastic tub, and now I want to double check my own setup before summer hits, so how are you folks mounting yours?
Last summer I had my 250 watt clamped to the rim of a rubber bin with a binder clip and a dream, and somehow it held. Then my cat bumped the cord and the whole thing slid down about half an inch from the pine shavings. Took me a minute to notice and I got lucky, the chicks just moved to the other side. Now I screw the clamp into a scrap 2x4 across the top so it can't drop, and I keep a thermometer on the floor of the brooder. Lamp height by feel is how people lose six birds overnight.
