A simple change to my coop floor made a huge difference

For the first two years, I just had packed dirt floors in my coop and run. It was fine, but cleaning was a real chore, especially after rain. Last fall, I put down a 6-inch layer of coarse construction sand in half the run as a test. The sand area stays dry, drains fast, and the chickens love dust bathing in it. The dirt side turns to mud for days and holds smells. I'm switching the whole run to sand this spring. Has anyone else made this switch and noticed less smell or easier upkeep?

Sand can get really gross over time though... it holds moisture underneath and starts to smell. The dirt floor lets things break down better in my experience. Maybe it just depends on your setup.

My neighbor's coop sand is way easier to clean now.
