I finally walked out of a Firestone after they tried to charge me $600 for a serpentine belt replacement

The guy at the counter told me 'it's a complicated job on these newer models' right before I found a YouTube video showing it takes 15 minutes, so I bought the belt for $28 and did it in my own driveway, has anyone else caught shops inflating labor hours on simple repairs?

My 2012 Civic needed a belt and the dealer quoted me $450. The guy said "it's a real pain, have to take the motor mount loose" which sounds scary but honestly it's just one bolt and a jack. I did it in my driveway in 22 minutes while my wife timed me. $28 at AutoZone for the belt and I had the old one off in 5 minutes. These shops bank on people being scared of their own cars and it works way too often. Good on you for checking first, that's the only way to keep from getting hosed.

Are we really acting surprised that a shop charges more than YouTube?
