Warning: a $600 diagnostic fee turned into a 3 day nightmare on a 2018 F-150
Had a 2018 F-150 come in last Tuesday with a misfire code on cylinder 4, customer already paid a $600 diagnostic fee at another shop that told him he needed a whole new engine. I pulled the coil and plug in about 10 minutes and found the plug was cracked, probably from a bad install at that first shop. Threw in a new plug and coil for $85 and the truck ran clean on the test drive. Then the customer calls back two days later saying it's misfiring again, so I dig deeper and find the injector connector is corroded and half unplugged. Spent another 4 hours tracing wiring and cleaning grounds before it finally held steady. Has anyone else seen a shop pad a diagnostic bill like that just to push a full engine swap?
Man that $600 diag fee is wild when you found it in 10 minutes. Had a similar deal last year, shop told a guy his trans was shot and quoted him 4 grand, turned out to be a loose ground strap. Some places just see dollar signs when a truck rolls in.
