Had a timing chain jump on a 2013 Chevy Cruze yesterday
Customer brought it in for a rough idle, figured it was just a coil pack. Pulled the valve cover and saw the timing chain had about 2 inches of slack. Ended up having to pull the whole engine to replace the guides and tensioner, which ran them $1,800 total. Anyone else seeing these Ecotec motors grenade chains way too early?

My buddy had a 2014 Cruze. Same thing at 72k miles. Chain slapped and bent a few valves. Cost him $2,200 for a used engine swap at a local shop. He sold the car right after.

Did @sam530's buddy find that 2,200 swap was a pretty decent deal for a running engine? I once knew a guy with a 2012 Malibu that had the same timing chain slap around 80k and he just kept driving it with a CONSTANT rattle for another 20k miles until the thing finally let go on the highway. After that he actually FIXED it and traded it in the next week, swore he'd never touch another GM 4-cylinder again.
