My DA sander ate a customer's fender on a Friday afternoon in Amarillo
I was finishing up a 2016 Silverado bed side at the shop in Amarillo around 4pm on a Friday when the hook and loop pad on my DA let go mid pass. The 80 grit disc shot off across the panel and gouged a 6 inch streak right through primer I had just laid down, so I stood there cussing at a truck that was supposed to get picked up Saturday morning. I grabbed my block and 180 paper and worked the gouge out by hand over the next 40 minutes rather than trying to feather it with the machine again. Customer showed up at 8am the next day and never noticed a thing, but I did tell him I had touched up a spot. Now I keep a spare backup pad in my box, which I should have done after the first time this happened. Anybody else had a backing pad fail on them, and do you trust the cheap replacements or stick with the name brand one?
Did you figure out it was the pad or the disc itself that gave out? I had one let go on a door skin and it did the same thing, shot off and chewed a line right through my sealer. After that I started pressing the disc down firm with my palm before I ever hit the trigger, and that alone cut way down on it happening.
