Why does nobody warn you that most museum artifacts rot in storage, not on display?
I was reading a report from the British Museum and it hit me hard. Only about 1% of their collection is ever on public view at one time. That means roughly 8 million objects sit in storage rooms where humidity, light, and pests slowly wreck them. A conservator in Chicago told me they lose track of items for decades because there is no money to catalog them all. I always pictured archaeology as dig, study, display, but the real gap is between the storage room and anyone who cares. What do you all think should happen to the stuff nobody will ever see?
My grandma had boxes of old photos in her basement that got wrecked by damp before anyone even looked at them, and museums are just that same thing but with 8 million items. Keeping stuff nobody will ever see seems pointless unless they at least put it online so people can actually use it.
