I used to think visual surveys were enough before we started excavating anything. But last month, on a site near Fredericksburg, we found what looked like a promising burial mound. I paid $200 to rent a ground penetrating radar unit for a day, and honestly I figured it was a waste. It mapped out two distinct soil disturbances that we would have dug right through, and one turned out to be a historic trash pit while the other had actual ceramic shards. That rental saved us from ruining the feature and made me rethink every site I've walked before. Has anyone else tried GPR on a smaller budget, or do you stick to cheap probing methods?
