I just finished my 500th tree risk assessment for the city's public parks.

It felt like a real milestone because I started this contract six years ago with just a basic checklist, and now the whole process is second nature, from checking root flares to assessing canopy targets.

A buddy of mine hit a similar mark with bridge inspections, and he said the weirdest part was forgetting how to explain it to someone new. The job just becomes this automatic thing in your hands and eyes, you know? He had to really slow down to train the next guy.

My old guitar teacher said you have to forget the song to really play it. That automatic feeling means you've moved past just following steps into seeing the whole picture at once. It's not forgetting how to do it, it's forgetting how you learned.

But what if you never learned the steps right in the first place? Automatic just means you're good at your own bad habits. You gotta remember the rules to know when to break them.
