Used to skip filler arcs in every anime until a friend showed me how Gintama handles them

For years I was that person who would look up filler lists and skip every non-canon episode. I thought they were just padding and a waste of time. Then last month my buddy made me watch the Gintama episode where they literally have a meeting about being a filler episode. It was so meta and self aware that it totally changed how I see filler now. Some of those episodes are actually better than the main plot. Anyone else had a show flip your opinion on something you used to hate?

Read something once about how Gintama's filler is actually just the writers goofing off because they earned the right to after so many serious arcs. It really opened my eyes to how filler can be used for character bonding and just having fun with the audience instead of stalling for time. Now I actually look forward to those silly episodes more than some main plot stuff!
