I actually prefer subbed over dubbed for Ghibli movies now

Tbh I used to be all about the Disney dubs on my VHS copies of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke back in 2003. But after I watched the sub of Howl's Moving Castle around 2016, I realized the original voice actors just hit different. The emotion in the Japanese performances feels way more real to me, even if I have to read subtitles the whole time. Anyone else swap sides on this debate after giving subs a real shot?

My 2003 Spirited Away DVD got me switching to subs in 2005.

Read an article once that said the english dubs change the actual meaning of some lines to fit mouth movements better. Makes sense why the subs feel more genuine. The Japanese voice actors put so much more raw emotion into it, especially in scenes with crying or anger. Totally get why you switched after Howl's Moving Castle, that movie has some heavy moments that need the real delivery. Christian Bale is great as Howl but the original actor brings out that dramatic flair way better.
