TIL my old ThinkPad runs better with Linux than Windows ever did
I had this old ThinkPad T420 sitting in my closet for years. It just got slower and slower after every Windows update until I could barely open a browser without waiting 2 minutes. Last Tuesday I finally gave up and installed Ubuntu on it, mostly because I was bored and had nothing else to do that afternoon. The whole process took about an hour and I kept thinking I was doing something wrong because everything was so smooth. Now I can actually use the thing for browsing and writing without it freezing up on me every 5 minutes. It even wakes from sleep in like 3 seconds which is insane compared to before. Has anyone else tried switching an old laptop over and been shocked at how much life it gets back?

I mean it's really not that complicated, you just put Linux on it and it works.

@dixon.willow its true that its not complicated but actually doing it and seeing the results is still wild. after years of watching that thing struggle just to boot up, watching it bounce back to life with ubuntu felt like a miracle. i know exactly what you mean about the sleep wake thing, its like having a whole new machine for nothing.
