My 35mm tank reel had a twist I never noticed for a year

I was loading film in the dark for like the 50th time and kept fighting the reel, then realized I had the two flanges backwards the entire time. The little ball bearings were facing inward instead of outward, which made every roll pinch and bind. How do you load yours, spiral in from the outside or snake it through the middle?
