Unpopular opinion: An old alarm wire roll in my storage got me thinking about the trade

I was cleaning out a corner and found a spool of thick, red alarm wire. It took me back to when we had to snake cables through walls and floors for every sensor. Those jobs needed real planning and muscle, not just sticking up a device. Now everything is wireless and so quick to put in. Part of me misses the craft of those wired installs, even if they were a pain.

Ever try to run wire in a house with no crawl space? My friend got hired to put a hardwired system in this ancient bungalow. He had to cut tiny holes in the closets to snake cables between floors, and he used a coat hanger to fish them through the walls. It took him three days just to get all the sensors linked up, and he was covered in dust and insulation. But he swore the solid click of each connection felt more sure than any wireless signal. That kind of work really was its own art form.

That thick red wire reminds me how much better a hardwired system feels than any wireless setup.

That coat hanger trick was the real MVP of every hardwired job. We'd all act like we had some secret tech, but it was just a straightened piece of wardrobe wire with tape on the end. The true art form was not cussing loud enough for the homeowner to hear when you snagged it on a fire block for the tenth time. You really did feel like a genius when it finally popped out of the tiny hole you cut. I don't miss the dust, but that feeling of a system you literally built into the walls beats any app notification.
