The door contact placement I swore by was backwards this whole time
I used to mount recessed contacts on the hinge side of doors because it was easier to drill. Last month a customer in Phoenix had a false alarm every time the wind blew, and after 3 service calls I realized the magnet gap was too big on the strike side. Swapped them to the strike side and it's been solid for 3 weeks now. Anyone else find that manufacturers should put a diagram in the box for this, or is it just me?

The gap issue gets worse on strike side too if the frame shifts with temp changes. In Phoenix you get that huge swing from 60 at night to 110 in the day, wood swells and shrinks, and a recessed contact on the hinge side never sees that movement because the door edge stays put. Strike side actually tells you when the frame moves. I started carrying a small gap gauge in the van, anything over 1/8 inch on a recessed set and I know it's gonna false. Manufacturers could print that on the box in about four lines and save everyone the callback.
