TIL why the old shoe factory in my town still has shoes on the racks after 40 years
I wandered into the old Webster Shoe Factory in Auburn last Saturday, and a former worker named Walt happened to be there taking photos of his old station. He pointed at a row of half-finished boots still sitting on the racks and said the last shift in 1983 just walked out when the owners shut the doors overnight, no warning at all. He remembered clocking in that morning and being handed a check instead of a work order, and he never came back until last year. I asked if it felt strange seeing his machine still covered in dust, and he just laughed. Does anyone know if the city plans to tear the place down, or can we still get inside?
Wondering if that Walt guy knows anything about the other old factories in the area too, because there's a textile mill down the road from me that's the same kind of deal, machines still threaded and everything. A buddy of mine actually snuck into the Webster place through a side door about five years back and said the front office still had papers and coffee mugs sitting out like everyone just vanished. Sounds like the city keeps talking about cleanup but nothing ever moves, so if you go, watch for the busted window on the loading dock side.
