Everyone says the old Kmart in my town was always a shell, but I have photos from 2019 proving it wasn't
I keep seeing people in this group post the empty Kmart on Route 9 in Fishkill, NY and call it a dead building that never had a life in it, and I have to push back on that. I shot the same parking lot in June 2019 when it was still open, cars everywhere, garden center full of mulch pallets, and then again this past March and the difference is wild. The whole lot is cracked now with weeds pushing through, and the inside got gutted down to bare walls after the closure in early 2020. The part that bugs me is people act like it looked like that forever, but I watched it go from busy to empty in under 5 years. Does anyone else have older shots of a spot that prove the doom posts wrong?
It's the same thing with old mall photos everywhere, people find a picture of some empty Sears from 2015 and act like the place was a ghost town from day one. What gets me is how fast it actually happens once a store closes, like the building almost gives up and the weeds win in two summers flat. Your June 2019 shots sound like the receipt people need, because busy parking lots and mulch pallets don't lie. I've noticed this pattern in a bunch of towns, where the memory of a place gets rewritten by whoever posts last, and the dead version wins because it gets more clicks. Keep those photos handy, because in a few more years even the folks who shopped there will start saying it was always empty.
