Why does nobody talk about the hassle of resetting electronic locks after a power surge...
The default codes never work and you're stuck for hours...

Last summer, a storm knocked out power and fried my garage door opener. Had to manually disconnect it and wait days for a part. The reset process was supposed to be simple, but the instructions were useless. Ended up calling a friend who knows more about circuits than I do. Now I keep a physical key hidden outside just in case. Makes you wonder if all this tech is more trouble than it's worth.

Schlage's factory reset, holding the button for 30 seconds, actually worked.

Wow, you had to wait days for a part? That's insane! How does that even happen with modern tech? I get that storms can cause issues, but shouldn't these things be built to handle a little power surge? What's the point of having a smart lock if it leaves you locked out for days? It makes me wonder if the old key and lock were more reliable after all.

Ugh, tell me about it! I read somewhere that power surges can mess with the memory chips in these locks, making resets a nightmare. Like @elizabethf93 said, sometimes the factory reset does work, but it's hit or miss. My neighbor had a similar issue with his front door lock after a storm, and he ended up replacing the whole unit because the codes were scrambled. It's frustrating when you rely on tech that just fails when you need it most. I've started keeping backup batteries and surge protectors for all my smart home stuff, just in case.
