Just hit 500 miles on my rock hammer and the head is way more loose than I expected
I've been mapping a shale unit in western Colorado for the last eight months, and my trusty Estwing finally clicked over that mark on my GPS log. I knew it would wear, but the play in the head is about a quarter inch now, which is a real safety issue on a swing. The fiberglass handle is fine, but the steel is just worn down from constant impact on hard rock. I'm worried someone else using an older tool might not check this before a long day. Has anyone else had a hammer fail near this mileage, and what did you replace it with?

My Estwing hit 800 miles before showing any real play.

That's a solid run for any hammer.

Damn, @derek939, what kind of work were you putting it through to hit that mark?
