Shocking, you mean I can't just beg my three friends for referrals and call it a day? Guess I'll go pair it with my other big effort, washing my car.

My buddy Mark, a freelance graphic designer, went six months without a single referral. He finally started posting his work process online, just short clips. Got his first new client from that within two weeks, someone who had never heard of him before. It really showed him that waiting for the phone to ring wasn't a plan. You have to put your work out there where new people can find it.
