Actually the whole "plants clean your air" thing is kinda overblown. That famous NASA study was for a sealed room, not a normal apartment with drafts. You'd need like 10 plants per square foot to match an air purifier. The breathing easier is probably from the humidity they put out or just the nice feeling of having green stuff around. They're great for mood, but not a real filter.
