Found a 1994 folk album at a yard sale in Asheville for a dollar, thought it would be boring.

The cover was just a blurry photo of a tree, but I put it on while cleaning and was completely wrong. The songwriting on 'The Ghost of a River' by a guy named Elias Crane is quietly amazing, full of these smart, sad stories. Has anyone else stumbled onto a record they judged by its cover that turned out to be a hidden gem?

My own worst find was a 1998 CD called "Songs for a Rainy Tuesday" with a truly awful cartoon frog on it. I only bought it as a joke gift, but the thing is actually a solid, gloomy alt-country record. I still feel bad for laughing at that frog.

That "solid, gloomy alt-country record" part is so real. I read a music blog once that said the worst album art often hides the best sad songs. They were right, it's like the ugly cover is a test.

That frog test is everywhere, like how the worst looking diners always have the best pie.
