Vent: I got banned from a big investing forum for a really dumb reason

I was on the 'Money Talks' forum last Thursday, just asking about a specific bond fund. I mentioned I was looking at it for my mom's retirement account in Phoenix. A moderator said I was 'giving personal advice' and locked the thread, then banned me for 30 days when I argued (politely, I thought). It felt like they were just power-tripping over a simple question. Has anyone else had a forum go way overboard with the rules like that?

My buddy got a week-long ban just for mentioning his home state in a stock question... some mods just have a hair trigger for anything that sounds even a little personal. It really kills the vibe of trying to learn anything.

Man, that's actually a pretty common rule on those big finance boards.

Oh come on, people really need to lighten up. @mason283 is right that these forums have rules, but banning someone for mentioning a city in a retirement question is just silly. It's not like you were handing out stock picks or promising returns. The mod probably just wanted to flex their power over something small. Honestly, if I got banned every time I broke some random rule on a forum, I'd be locked out of half the internet by now. It's just a bond fund question, not a terrorist plot. People need to remember these are just hobby sites, not government agencies.
