Saw a prop from my favorite show at a convention and the price shocked me

I was at a convention in Chicago last weekend and a vendor had a screen-used communicator from the original Star Trek. The price tag was $12,000! I always knew screen-used stuff was valuable, but seeing that number in person really hit different. It was just sitting there in a glass case. Has anyone else been surprised by the actual cost of a famous prop they've seen for sale?

Forget the price for a second, what was the actual item like? Was it beat up and worn from filming, or did it look surprisingly cheap and plastic in person? That always gets me, seeing how flimsy some of that famous stuff really is.
