Tried a different post hole digger on a rocky lot in Boise

Used a manual auger with a rock bit on a property full of river stone, thinking it would be easier than the machine. It just bounced off and nearly threw me off my feet. Anyone have a better method for setting posts in ground that's more rock than dirt?

My neighbor in Eagle had the same problem with river rock. He ended up renting a small jackhammer with a spade bit to break up the ground first. It made a huge mess but got through the worst of it. After that, he used a standard post hole digger to clear out the loose material. It was a two-step process, but the posts are solid and haven't moved in three years.
