I finally figured out why my clinches were never quite right
For the past year, I've been using a 3/4 inch nail on most standard shoes and just couldn't get that clean, tight roll. Last week, an older farrier at a clinic in Lexington watched me work and said, 'Your nail point is too long for that wall thickness.' He showed me how to measure the wall and pick a nail that leaves just the right amount to turn over. I switched to a 5/8 inch for my next few horses and the difference was night and day. How do you all decide on nail length for different hoof types?

Seriously, that's wild! I've seen people get held up on the smallest details before. Like my neighbor once stopped a whole fence project because one picket was a slightly different shade of white. It's just crazy how a tiny measurement can cause so much delay. Some folks have a vision and will not budge one bit!
