My neighbor's hedge trimmer died mid-branch and I had to finish his driveway cleanup

Last Saturday, I saw Mr. Garcia wrestling with a dead trimmer while trimming his overgrown hedge. He asked if I could help, so I grabbed my old corded one from the garage and finished the job in 20 minutes. The ethical question is: should I have accepted the $20 he tried to hand me, or was that just being neighborly?

That twenty dollars was his way of saying thank you for bailing him out... I took a similar offer once from my neighbor Frank after I helped him untangle his extension cord mess and got his blower running again. I felt awkward about it too but honestly, that kind of neighborly trade is how we keep each other sane around here.

Gotta love when a neighborly favor turns into a mini wage negotiation. I half expect Frank to start handing out pay stubs with my holiday bonus.
