A callout in Denver last month showed me a weird new failure mode on those old Otis Gen2 units

I mean, it was a standard door lock fault, but the cause was the guide shoe rollers completely disintegrating. The nylon just turned to powder after about fifteen years. The car was stuck about three inches out of level at the floor. Had to replace all four rollers and the entire lower guide assembly. It took twice as long as the ticket said. Has anyone else seen this specific wear pattern on the Gen2s, or was this just a bad batch of parts?

Oh man, you saw that too? I ran into the exact same thing on a bank job last year... the nylon just crumbled in your hand like old chalk. We ended up having to shim the car level just to get the new rollers in. Feels like all those units are hitting that age at the same time.

That powdering nylon is a real headache. Reminds me of a job where the door hanger rollers gave out in a similar way, just turned to dust. The whole car would shudder every time the doors closed. Ended up being a full weekend replacing every plastic part in the door operator before it ran smooth again.
