Water stain on my ceiling turned into a $1,200 bathroom reno

I noticed a small yellow spot in my living room ceiling last month and figured it was just a leaky pipe. After cutting out the drywall I found the shower pan upstairs had been cracked for years and was rotting the subfloor. Anyone else have a simple fix snowball into something way bigger than expected?

Three hundred bucks for a new water heater turned into a full electrical panel upgrade and a hole in my kitchen wall that still isn't patched six months later. I had the same thing happen with a shower leak that took out the ceiling in my hallway and then we found mold in three different walls. It's like that old saying about fixing one thing and suddenly you're gutting half your house. My buddy calls it the "while we're in here" tax and I swear it's worse than the actual repair costs. At this point I just assume any water stain is a thousand dollar problem hiding behind a twenty dollar fix.

It's the same reason I never buy a used car without expecting to sink another grand into it within three months. The universe has this way of turning a simple "replace the hose" into "well, the gasket's shot, and while we're at it, the bracket's rusted clean through." I swear, home maintenance is just a slow motion game of Jenga, where every piece you pull out reveals three more that are ready to fall. You pull on a loose thread and suddenly you're wearing a sweater with no sleeves and a hole in the armpit. The real trick is learning to just live with the drip until you've saved up enough to afford the whole sweater.
