I realized I'd been painting walls wrong for 15 years after a guy at the hardware store in Portland showed me how to load the roller
He said I was pushing too hard and not using a 5-in-1 tool to lay off the paint, and now my last bedroom wall came out smooth and even with zero streaks - has anyone else had a basic technique change that suddenly made everything better?

Wait, are you saying I should have been using a 5-in-1 tool this whole time instead of just my trusty (but apparently useless) putty knife? I always thought pushing harder meant more paint coverage, but now I'm wondering if I've been making extra work for myself for years.
That trick about laying off the paint is a game changer, though. I found that if I go over the wet paint with a nearly dry roller (just the lightest touch), it knocks out those roller marks completely. Combined with that proper loading technique, it's like magic.
