Finally chose sanded grout over unsanded for my kitchen backsplash
After staring at a half-finished backsplash for a week, I had to pick between sanded and unsanded grout for my 1/8 inch tile gaps. I went with sanded because the guy at the tile shop near Portland said it holds up better in kitchens. It was a pain to work with at first, but after three days it's rock solid and no cracks yet. Has anyone else had trouble getting sanded grout to spread evenly on small joints?

Did you use a grout float or just a rubber spreader for those thin joints?

Yeah @west.alice, I stuck with a rubber spreader for those thin joints since a grout float felt too bulky for the narrow gaps. The rubber let me press the grout in without scraping the tile edges, which is the main thing you want to avoid. Just took a bit more patience to get it even, but the result was cleaner in the end.
