My kitchen backsplash project: grout float vs. my hands

Tiled my first backsplash last weekend. Decided to save $15 and use my hands to push the grout in. Took me 4 hours and my fingers were raw. My buddy came over and just handed me his grout float. Finished the other wall in 45 minutes. The float got way more grout in the joints, way less mess. Why did I think my hands were a good idea? Anyone else skip a basic tool and regret it instantly?

Oh man, that's the perfect example of learning the hard way. I once tried to mix a small batch of thinset with a paint stirrer and a drill because I didn't want to buy a proper mixing paddle. Made a huge mess and my arm was sore for two days. The right tool doesn't just save time, it saves your sanity. Your hands are not a multi-tool, no matter how much we wish they were.
