Tried 4 different coupling caps in my 5F1 clone, the cheap ones won

I rebuilt my champ style amp last month and swapped in a few different coupling caps to see what the fuss was about. Spent $18 on some fancy orange drops and mullard style caps, but the plain ceramic discs I had laying around sounded better to my ears. The high end was smoother and the bass didn't get all mushy when I cranked the volume. Has anyone else done a blind test like this or am I just used to the budget sound?
