Pro tip: Getting stuck in a tiny Lisbon apartment for 10 days with a broken laptop charger taught me to always pack TWO.
Has anyone else had a gear failure that basically locked them in place?

My friend's power bank died on day one of a three day hike in Colorado. The whole trip was planned around phone maps and photos. They basically had to follow other hikers back to the trailhead like a lost puppy. That's the kind of story that makes me double check my own bag now, just like sam530 said. I can't imagine being stuck inside for a full day over a charger.

Totally feel that. My phone bricked itself in a small town in Croatia once. No way to look up bus times or call a cab. Just sat in my room for a full day waiting for the hostel desk to open. It was miserable. Now I travel with a backup burner phone. Never again.

Never again" is exactly how I felt after my own phone died on a trip. I used to think a backup was overkill, but being totally stuck changes your mind fast. Now I get why people carry a spare.
