The difference 6 months of daily gesture drawings made for my character work
I started doing 5 minute gesture sketches every morning back in March, just random poses from Croquis Cafe videos. Last night I went back and looked at my stuff from February and the difference is NIGHT and day. My proportions actually look like a real human now instead of some weird alien creature. The funny thing is I didn't even notice it happening, it just sort of clicked after about 80 sessions. Anyone else have a practice habit that slowly transformed their art without them realizing?

I mean, it's gesture drawings not rocket science.

Right, because nothing says "no pressure" like being told to capture the essence of a human body in thirty seconds flat. Maybe it's just me, but rocket science at least gives you a formula to memorize instead of just hoping your charcoal lines don't look like a sad pretzel. I bet the people saying that have never had their teacher walk by and whisper "loosen up" while you're already sweating through your shirt. It's almost like they forget we're trying to draw actual anatomy, not just scribble some ovals and call it a day. Blows my mind how casual people get about something that can make your hand cramp up for an hour after class.
