My nephew's rough start in diesel work shifted my perspective on family shops

I used to believe keeping the trade in the family was always good. My uncle ran a diesel repair business for years. He pushed my nephew into working there right out of high school. The kid struggled with the long hours and complex engine diagnostics. It led to big arguments during holiday dinners, real tension. Seeing him frustrated with fuel injector issues day after day changed my mind. Forcing someone into this life can break family bonds. Let people find their own path, even if it means no one takes over the shop.

Honestly I heard a podcast once that said exactly what patj30 mentioned, about the part-time trial run thing. Tbh it just makes way more sense than forcing it.

Short one: Family over business, always. Longer: What gets me is how it hurts the work too. Someone who doesn't want to be there won't take pride in the job. The quality drops, the shop's name suffers, and for what. You can't fake passion for this kind of work. It just burns everyone out and leaves a mess.

Man, you nailed it with this one. I've seen shops push kids into the trade and it never ends well. Let them try it out part-time first, no strings attached, to see if it's really for them. Forcing it just wrecks what matters most.
