Hot take: my router update locked me out of my own network for 2 days
Last Friday I ran a firmware update on my router that I had put off for 4 months, and it reset every custom setting I had, including my guest network password and port rules. I could not get back in until I found the old config backup on a USB stick in my desk drawer, which took me two days of digging. Lesson learned the hard way: export your settings before you click update, not after. Has anyone else had a firmware update quietly wipe their setup like that?

Two days of digging for a USB stick sounds more like a you problem than a router problem. Most updates these days keep your settings unless you hit a factory reset, and mine have pulled through fine for years. I would rather take the five minute update than sit on old firmware with holes in it.
