Unpopular opinion: I thought 80mm fans in a sleeper build were hopeless until my Dell Dimension swap
Kept hitting 85C in a 2001 Dimension 4300 case with a modern GPU stuffed inside, and I figured those tiny stock fans just couldn't move enough air. Then a guy at the Raleigh swap meet last month showed me how to flip the rear 80mm to intake and cut a 92mm hole up top, and my temps dropped 14 degrees, so now I'm a believer. Anyone else running 80mm fans in an old case, and what's your secret for keeping things cool?
Did you notice a big drop right away or did it take a few days to settle in? I did almost the same thing with an old Compaq I picked up, flipped the rear fan to intake and crammed a 92mm up top with a hole saw, and yeah, my temps went from scary to totally fine. Those little 80s get a bad rap but once you give them fresh air to work with they actually do their job.
