Showerthought: my $45 sound dampening foam kit saved my sleeper build, but I've seen it cook other people's temps
I dropped $45 on a foam kit from a local shop in Denver last month for my sleeper, an old beige 1998 case holding a modern 12 core chip and a big GPU. On one side, that foam killed the fan drone and the hard drive chatter, and my case temps barely moved, maybe 2 degrees up at most under load. On the other side, a buddy tried the same thing in a smaller case with one exhaust fan and his GPU temps jumped 9 degrees because the foam starved his airflow. Now I keep hearing people argue foam is a must for sleepers and others say it is a trap that turns any old case into an oven. I think it comes down to how much intake you already have, but I want to hear from folks here. Did sound foam help your sleeper or burn you on temps, and what case were you running?
That Denver foam kit sounds like the same deal I got, and my 2003 Antec with 3 intake fans barely saw a 3 degree bump while the noise dropped a ton. Your buddy's setup makes sense though, stuffing foam in a one exhaust case is just choking the poor thing.
