Rant: my sleeper build died 3 weeks ago and I traced it to one dumb cable I ran under the drive cage
So I've got this old beige Gateway tower from 1999 that I stuffed a Ryzen 7 and a 3080 into about a year and a half back. It was running great, quiet, nobody ever looked twice at it sitting on my desk. Then about 3 weeks ago it just shut off in the middle of a render and wouldn't post. I panicked and started swapping everything, reseated the ram, tried a new psu, pulled the gpu out and ran it on the igpu, nothing. Turned out my 24 pin extension was pinched between the drive cage and the frame where I routed it to keep things clean, and after 18 months of the side panel pressing on it, two of the wires had worn through and were shorting on the metal. I felt like such an idiot because back when I built my first machine in high school, I just shoved every cable wherever and it never mattered, cases had way more room and nothing was crammed. Now everything is packed so tight in these old shells that one bad bend can bite you a year later. I fixed it with a $6 extension and some heat shrink and it's back up, but I keep wondering how many sleepers out there are one worn wire away from the same thing. What's the tightest spot you've had to route a cable in an old case?
