Just realized the guy who fixed my parents' VCR in 1994 taught me more about cruising than any travel blog
I was maybe 9 years old, sitting on the floor of a repair shop in Norfolk while my dad argued about a bill, and this old guy named Walt kept working on a VCR the whole time. He noticed me staring at a photo on his wall, a big white ship with a funnel, and he said he'd spent 11 years as a radio operator on a liner that ran New York to Southampton before he ever touched a VCR. He told me the best part of the job was the night watch, when the whole ship went quiet and you could hear the engines and nothing else, and he said people pay thousands now for what he got paid to do. I didn't get it back then, I just wanted to go home and play Nintendo. But I took my first cruise out of Miami two years ago and stood on the deck around 2 a.m. with nobody else around, and I finally understood exactly what Walt meant. Been on five since, still chase that same feeling, and I never got to tell him. Did anyone else have a random stranger plant the travel bug in them way before they actually went anywhere?
