Getting stuck in Cozumel without my passport and how I handled it

I was on a 7 night cruise out of Miami last October and left my passport in the cabin safe when we docked in Cozumel. I realized it when I tried to get back on the ship and the crew wouldn't let me board with just my driver's license. Has this happened to anyone else and what did you do to get back on board?

Wait, you didn't have your passport at all on a cruise that stopped in Mexico? That's wild to me, I always thought you needed it to even get on the ship in Miami in the first place. Pretty sure a birth certificate plus ID works for closed loop cruises, but once you're off the boat in a foreign port you're kinda stuck without the passport.
