The 'show don't tell' rule killed my best story, and I'm done pretending it didn't
Read a writing coach online say every flashback is lazy, but my 300 word piece about my dad's old fishing trips only worked because I let the narrator remember the smell of bait and the creak of the dock, so how do you handle rules that feel like they erase real voice?
