The library clerk who guessed my whole plot in 2 minutes
I was stuck on a fantasy opening at the downtown branch last Tuesday, just staring at my notebook. This older clerk walked by and said, "You're writing about a door that shouldn't be there, aren't you?" I hadn't told anyone, but the word "threshold" was underlined on my page. She pointed to a prompt book from 1998 on the shelf and said, "Every story starts with one wrong step, so make it loud." It hit me that a good prompt doesn't need a whole scene, just a single cracked detail. Has anyone else had a stranger nail your story idea and shift the whole approach?
