Finally beat my blank page problem by writing the worst version first on purpose
I used to sit at my desk in Portland for an hour staring at an empty doc every time I picked a prompt from this sub, and almost nothing ever came out. Two weeks ago I started doing something dumb: I give myself 10 minutes to write the worst, most cliche version of the scene on purpose, no fixing it. First try I got 400 words of garbage, but about 3 lines in there was a diner cook who counts tips out loud, and that guy turned into a whole short story. The trick works because my brain stops trying to be good and just gets words down. Anyone got a different warm up trick that gets you past that first blank page?
