Saw a 300 ton crawler lift a water tank in Boise and finally got why old guys check the ground first
I was in Boise last month visiting my sister and drove past this job site where they were setting a 40,000 gallon water tank. I pulled over just to watch for a bit since I run a 60 ton boom truck back home and figured I knew what I was looking at. The operator spent a solid 20 minutes just walking the mats and eyeballing the soil before he even climbed in the cab. I kept thinking come on man, hook up and go. Then he swung the load and I saw his outriggers sink maybe half an inch into the dirt and he stopped everything, got out, and had them add another mat. That half inch would have been nothing on the asphalt I usually work off of. Been running cranes for 9 years and I never once thought about how different dirt is from pavement until I watched that guy. Now I want to know, do you guys working off soil always add extra mats or is that just being careful?

Nah, half inch on dirt means way more than on pavement.
