My Miami night shift crane job taught me to trust the old way of hand signals
After a near miss with a spotter using radio comms during a tight load over a crowded marina on Biscayne Bay three months ago, I now insist on a hand signal backup for every blind lift, and I wonder how many of you have dropped the old signals completely?

Forget the radios for a second. Hand signals are the only thing that works when somebody's phone dies or the battery runs out on site. I've seen guys freeze up completely when their earpiece goes dead mid-lift. That's when people get hurt. Plus, hand signals force everyone to actually look at the load and each other. Radio chatter makes people lazy, they listen but don't watch. You can't do that with hand signals, your eyes have to be on the operator. Keep both, but teach the new guys the old way first.
